International Lhotse 8516m. Expedition Spring 2017

A Swiss expedition team ascended mount Lhotse in 1956. Its lower peak, mount Lhotse Shar 8383m, is sometimes considered as a separate 8000m peak. The meaning of this Mount Lhotse is "South Peak", a part of the Everest massif, just to the south of Everest. Through Everest's South Col is the primary route to reach the summit of Mount Lhotse. But by 1955, despite the increasing activity on Mount Everest, Lhotse was still the highest virgin summit in the world. The first attempt to conquer mount Lhotse was made by an international team in 1955. One member of the party was Erwin Schneider, who began to work on the first of the series of high-quality "Schneider maps of the Everest region" during the expedition. The previous Swiss party who made the second ascent of Everest in 1956 made the first ascent to mount Lhotse from a camp just below the South Col. Mount Lhotse Shar was first successfully conquered by an Austrian expedition in 1970. Later Japanese, South Koreans, and Germans attempted from other routes to reach its main peak. Some Polish and Italians also successfully climbed the peak before the summit was conquered again by German expeditions in 1977.
